National Privacy Week
Awareness, Engagement, Digital Safety
National Privacy Week (NPW) is Nigeria’s flagship event dedicated to advancing data protection, digital trust, and responsible innovation. Aligned with global observances, NPW unites policymakers, industry leaders, academic institutions, and citizens to shape the future of Nigeria’s privacy-respecting digital economy.
Welcome Address
It is with great honour and a sense of profound responsibility that I welcome you to the National Privacy Week 2026.
As we navigate an era defined by rapid digital transformation, the boundaries of our physical and digital lives have become inextricably linked. From the way we conduct commerce to how we access healthcare and interact with government services; data has become the lifeblood of our modern economy. However, with this great connectivity comes the imperative duty to protect the personal information that fuels it.
Under the theme “Data Privacy in the Age of Emerging Technologies: Trust, Ethics and Innovation,” this year’s National Privacy Week serves as a pivotal moment for reflection and action. Commencing on January 28 to coincide with the Global Data Privacy Day celebrations and culminating on February 4 in honour of the NDPC’s Anniversary, this week-long event underscores our transition beyond mere awareness toward a sustainable culture of active empowerment and digital trust.
The Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) remains steadfast in its mandate, established under the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) 2023, to create a safe and trusted digital ecosystem. Our focus in this weeklong activities is to:
Providing every Nigerian with the knowledge to exercise their rights as enshrined in the NDP Act 2023.
We continue to work with Data Controllers and Processors to ensure that compliance is not just a regulatory requirement but a cornerstone of Nigerian business ethics.
By building trust, we are unlocking the potential of our digital economy, particularly in job and wealth creation as well as global competitiveness of our businesses. Our National Certification Program for Data Protection Officers is on track to create thousands of specialized jobs, making Nigeria a global hub for data privacy expertise.
Privacy is not an isolated privilege; it is a fundamental right guaranteed by our Constitution. Throughout this event, we have curated a series of webinars, workshops, and youth engagement programmes designed to bridge the digital divide and ensure that no Nigerian from our bustling cities to our rural communities is left behind in the digital age.
Together, let us build a Nigeria where innovation thrives on a foundation of trust and every citizen feels secure in their digital identity.
Dr. Vincent Olatunji, DPO, CPPPS, FIIM
National Commissioner/CEO,
